Many tried but in the the end there was only one magician that was able to fool Black Bert & Kent at the inaugural Assembly #206 Fool Us contest!
Congratulations to Ryan DuMont, the first winner of the annual Assembly #206 Fool Us contest!
On Memorial Day, Monday May 29th, SAM Assembly #206 held their inaugural Fool Us contest kicking off a new annual tradition for the Assembly. Eight performers pulled out their best magician-foolers (with a few even trying twice) in an attempt to fool the judges Kent Cummins and Bertil Fredstrom.
Ryan DuMont started the evening with a multi-spectator card trick where the combined number of cards revealed the location of the card selected at the beginning of the performance.
Dylan Love then followed up with a wedding-themed mentalism trick determining the location of a rose, ring and note that the spectator had put in their different pockets with a kicker ending of the note revealing where the items were located as well.
Dan Pace followed up with more mentalism with a prediction straight out of the Weekly World News.
Vice-President Bill Loss was the first to bring out the cards with the aces vanishing one at a time and reappearing back in the card box.
After a short break, Secretary Joe Weaver performed an anti-card effect with the spectator thinking of a card that was opposite of the one they had selected and pulling it out of the deck.
Ranferi Denova changed things up with a cut and restored rope effect that was one of the first tricks he learned and had performed for the Assembly when he first joined. John Carter brought it back to cards with a blackjack themed reveal of a chosen card.
Three performers tried for a second time to fool the judges with Dan doing an elegant coin penetration effect, Dylan having Alan follow what he did so well that they found the same card, and Joe telling a story about a time in New Orleans when he met a man with 3 skulls on a spike.
Tim Dietz closed out the night by making a fish appear in a glass that matched the color the spectators had chosen.
In the end though only one magician was able to confound the judges and take home the trophy. Congratulations to Ryan DuMont for being the first winner of the (now) annual Assembly #206 Fool Us contest!
It was a great meeting, with a lot of fun magic. We hope that more magicians from the Austin area (or even those that happen to be in town) can join us in June.
