On a hot summer evening, Monday, June 26th, SAM Assembly #206 met for a meeting centered around Homemade Magic. Based on the creations members showed, we have a very creative group of magicians!
President Adam Dunraven opened the meeting by performing his latest creation, Frozen Fashion, for the first time anywhere! He then went on to show members the different versions of it that he has created over the years and different applications of the same principle before ending with a selected card and superhero appearing in a picture frame that had been on display since before the meeting.
Kent Cummins then followed up by showing a trick based on the same principles that had been built for him by Peter the Adequate for a show he was hired to do a literal zoo! He then showed the members a jigsaw puzzle-based trick that he degree built with his brother when they were kids, expanding on the animal theme he had already introduced.
Dan Page then followed up with a mesmerizing performance involving twin Jokers that were able to stand on their own and balance not just a disk on their heads, but a ball on top of that.
After a short break, Immediate Past President, Bertil Fredstrom performed the classic Tip Over Box illusion that he had built in his high school woodworking class. He explained how he had worked off of plans in a book and learned through experience the small tweaks needed for the illusion to work. He managed to keep the methods hidden from his shop teacher the entire time he was building it!
Brooks Griffith then showed how Jokers can be used to duplicate a chosen card (they are wild, after all) but that there’s a law of diminishing returns that comes into play when they’re used that way. See the video link in the digital version of MUM to see what they can do.
Ryan DuMont closed out the meeting with an original performance of a classic trick involving arches that change from long to short and back again. His presentation was great and ideas flowed after that on ways he could make it even stronger.
It was a fantastic meeting, with a lot of discussion on how things can be custom-made at home and playing to your strengths. We hope that more magicians from the Austin area (or even those that happen to be in town) can join us in July.
Correction - in the last Assembly notes Ryan DuMont was incorrectly captioned in the photo as “Alan DuMont” - apologies to Ryan DuMont, the current Assembly #206 Fool Us champion.
