SAM Assembly #206 met for a mentalism themed meeting on April 24th, 2023, in the historic Hilger’s House located in downtown Austin.
The evening opened with a discussion of the The Phantom of the Opera and the magic designed for and included in the production. Kent Cummins then shared his stories of various Phantom related projects that he’s participated in.
President Adam Dunraven then started the performances with 4 different mentalism effects including a large scale original take on the magic classic Color Vision. After performing, Adam held a mini-lecture on the methods and thinking behind the effects.
Kent then shared the history of Magic Computer Cards and showed multiple versions of it that have been produced over the years before giving a performance of it.
Dylan Love performed an effect that involved a spectator thinking of and writing down the name of someone they loved that he later revealed. By contrast, Secretary Joe Weaver asked for a volunteer to think of someone they despised for a performance of Deja-Voodoo.
Steve Farmer followed up with an effect involving a thought of card and reveal with no cards needed for the performance.
John Carter closed out the meeting with a performance of Hooked that had the entire club on the edge of their seats.
It was a fantastic night of magic in downtown Austin. We hope that even more magicians from the Austin area (or even those that just happen to be in town) are able to join for the May meeting on Monday the 29th. The May meeting will be a Fool Us contest where Assembly members will attempt to fool magicians Kent Cummins and Bertil Fredstrom.
